Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Lloyd Hutchinson was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th round of the 1969 amateur draft. He played four seasons in their organization but never reached the majors.

Hutchinson debuted with the Walla Walla Bears and hit .278/~.358/.494 with 10 homers, two behind Northwest League leader Bruce Hotchkiss. Returning to Walla Walla (now the Walla Walla Phillies) in 1970, Hutchinson batted .307/~.378/.526 in 72 games and finished 9th in the NWL in average. He tied Blas Santana and Dale Sanner for the league lead with 14 homers and paced the circuit with 151 total bases. He appears to have been third in slugging percentage. Hutchinson joined teammate Bob Beall on the NWL All-Star team.

Lloyd had another fine campaign in 1971, now with the Spartanburg Phillies. He led Western Carolinas League outfielders in fielding percentage (.976) and was second in assists (12). He hit .335/~.433/.614 with 98 runs, 25 homers and 86 RBI in 114 games. He was second to Steven Gardner in average, led in slugging, led in total bases (240), tied Jesus de la Rosa for the lead in sacrifice flies (6) and tied Dave Criscione for the home run lead. He joined Rowland Office and Gregory Foreman on the WCL All-Star outfield.

He also appeared briefly in 1971 with the Peninsula Phillies, striking out in both at-bats.

Hutchinson finished his career in 1972 with the Reading Phillies. He hit .282/~.368/.406 in 66 games.

His son is pitcher Chad Hutchinson. After Chad's baseball career ended, he was a quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears of the NFL. Chad had initially hesitated to go into baseball after a stellar high school career because his mother Martha had told him of the difficult life Lloyd had experienced in the minor leagues. Another son, Trevor Hutchinson, also pitched in the minors.
