When the Ohio State League was re-established in the middle of World War II in 1944, the Lima, OH team was a St. Louis Cardinals farm club known as the Lima Red Birds. Lima finished fourth of six OSL teams at 65-62-1 and then lost in the playoffs, 3 games to 1, to the Newark Moundsmen. Two-way wizard Dick Steinhauer went 7-1 with a 2.15 ERA and hit .361/~.489/.583 in 22 games. The offense included 1B Harvey Zernia (.310/~.412/.431, 26 SB, 95 R, a league-high 114 RBI) and OF Neal Reside (.339/~.398/.500, 102 RBI, 39 SB and a league-high 120 runs, 32 doubles and 13 triples). The next season the club became a Cincinnati Reds team and changed their name a bit, to the Lima Reds.
