Biographical Information[edit]
"The Governors . . . close(d) the season in second place . . . Popular Lew Whistler deserves all the credit, and had he gotten fair treatment in the way of umpires and the support of the magnates of the local backers he would have won the flag hands down." - from Sporting Life of September 24, 1898
Lew Whistler played four seasons in the National League. As a rookie, he hit quite well, but was average in his second and third seasons and well below-average in his last.
Whistler also had an extensive minor league career which ran from 1887-1905, serving as a player-manager for a decade. He also worked one National League game as a fill-in umpire in 1891.
