Leesburg Lightning

Team Biography[edit]

Originally formed as the Orlando Shockers, the Leesburg Lightning are one of the founding members of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. As the Orlando Shockers, the team played their home games in Hershiser Field, a stadium built named after former Major League pitcher and 1988 National League Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser. The Shockers began sharing the field with the Orlando Hammers in 2006, which may have contributed to the teams financial instability. Following the 2006 season the Shockers were forced to pull up roots due to financial constraints and limited local funding. The Shockers moved to Leesburg, FL and adopted their present name to begin the 2007 season.

The Lightning are a Major League Baseball-sanctioned Summer Collegiate Baseball team which is designed and dedicated to provide the nation's collegiate players the opportunity to compete at a higher level and prepare for entering the MLB Draft. The Lightning operate in the model of an Inependent Minor League team: recruiting players, playing nightly in stadiums before fans, using wood bats and minor league specification equipment and experiencing road trips between games. Like all other summer collegiate players, the Leesburg Lightning are unpaid in order to maintain their NCAA eligibility and live with host families in the same manner as Single A and Independent League players.
