Biographical Information

Left-hander Lee Griffeth spent eight seasons in professional baseball from 1946 to 1953. The Duke University pitcher started his first season with the major league Philadelphia Athletics on June 25, 1946. He appeared in 10 games, gave up 7 runs and 13 hits but had no decisions, and shortly after his final game in the big leagues on August 6th, he was on the mound for the Lancaster Red Roses of the class B Interstate League where he finished out his first season at 2-3 in five outings.

Griffeth was released by the Athletics on July 28, 1947 but worked out of the Brooklyn Dodgers organization for the remainder of his minor league career.

Griffeth was destined to spend seven more seasons in the minor leagues, 1947 to 1953, with seven different teams, some of them more than once, and also seven different leagues, some of them also more then one season. Lee did have three double-digit winning years, in 1948 at 11-13, 1951 he was 10-6 and 1952 Lee was 10-15. He also came up with two winning years and five losing. In all probabilities his best year came in 1951 when he had his 10-6 record for the Mobile Bears of the AA Southern Association with a 4.07 ERA while pitching 137 innings.

Griffeth left baseball before the 1953 season with a 44-52 record in 197 games with an estimated 4.15 ERA while pitching 822 innings. Leon Clifford Griffeth passed away on August 3, 2007 in Durham, NC at 82 years of age.
