Biographical Information[edit]

Larry Smith was 19 when he umpired in the Pioneer League in 1965. He was with the league from late March to early September when he was released. On January 4, 1966 he was signed by the California League and joined the league's crew. He umped in the league in 1966 and for part of the 1967 season but was put on the league's military list on July 16th after he was drafted.

Smith was reserved for the 1968 season but was shipped out in March arriving in Vietnam on March 17th. He was a Medical Corpsman in the Army's 11th Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of Private First Class. He was killed in action on August 23rd, less than a week shy of his 22nd birthday in Quang Ngai Province after suffering multiple fragmentation wounds. His name is listed on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC on panel 47W line 55.
