Ladies' Day Riot
The Ladies' Day Riot was an incident that occurred on September 13, 1897 when a crowd of angry women rushed onto the field and physically abused umpire Bill Carpenter after he ejected Washington Senators' pitcher Win Mercer from the game. Police needed to be called to break things up and rescue Carpenter from the angry mob. Carpenter apparently left the ballpark with torn clothes and several bruises all over his body as a result of the attack but didn't suffer any major injuries.
