Pitcher Kyle Gaddin was a participant in the first MLB African Academy in 2011. He debuted for the South African national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. His first outing came in a crucial game, the finale, with a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic at stake. Given the start against host Australia, he hit Mitch Dening and allowed hits to Stefan Welch and Trent Oeltjen for a first-inning run. He left after two innings with a 1-1 tie, replaced by veteran Carl Michaels; South Africa wound up losing 12-5.
