Biographical Information

Kirby Snead was one of a large number of young pitchers who were given a look by the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2021 season, making his major league debut on July 28th. The Jays that year had one of the most pottent attacks in the majors and a solid corps of starting pitchers, but their bullpen, apart ferom first-year closer Jason Romano, kept on blowing leads, a trend that eventually kept them out of the postseason. Snead pitched fairly well in his 7 games for the Jays, putting up an ERA of 2.35 in 7 2/3 innings, but his only decision was a loss and he did not seem to be ready to handle some of the higher pressure roles in the pen, so he went back to the minors. With the Buffalo Bisons of the Triple-A East, he was 2-0, 1.58 in 36 games, with 4 saves and 57 strikeouts in 40 innings.

The Blue Jays selected Kirby in the 10th round of the 2016 amateur draft, out of the University of Florida. He had been a reliever in college and stuck to the role in the pros, with some success. He had 8 saves and an ERA of 1.36 in 26 games for the Dunedin Blue Jays after a mid-season promotion in 2017, and a 1.08 ERA for the same team in his first games in 2018 beofre earning a promotion to AA. He seemed to be on the verge of making his major league debut at the end of the 2019 season, after making 41 appearances with a 5-2 record for Buffalo, but had to sit out all of 2020 because the Coronavirus pandemic shut down the minor leagues.

On March 16, 2022, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics along with 3B Kevin Smith and Ps Gunnar Hoglund and Zach Logue to obtain 3B Matt Chapman.
