Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Kevin Smith was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 4th round of the 2017 amateur draft out of the University of Maryland. he reached the majors with the Jays when they were in the middle of a race for a postseason slot late in the 2021 season and appeared in 18 games at the major league level, going 3 for 32 with his first career homer. In the minor leagues that year, he had hit .285/.370/.561 in 94 games, with 27 doubles and 21 homers for the Buffalo Bisons of Triple-A East, after having been forced to sit out the previous seaon due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On March 16, 2022, he was one of four young players traded to the Oakland Athletics by the Blue Jays in order to acquire 3B Matt Chapman. As a major league-ready third baseman, he was in a good position to claim Chapman's old job with Oakland, something which would have been very diffcult with the Blue Jays, so the trade represented a good opportunity for him. Also traded to the A's that day were three young pitchers, Gunnar Hoglund, Zach Logue and Kirby Snead.
