Biographical Information

"Kid Baldwin says the chances of some one of the Cincinnatis dropping dead or breaking a leg are very slim, indeed, and that while he is resting he will buy a plug hat and join Tony Mullane in catching foul balls and doing the dude act in the grand stand. He says there is no use to practice when he does not have the opportunity to play." - Sporting Life, March 11, 1885

I'm catching too good ball for you; how you wish I wasn't on the nine; never mind, old vet, I'll have your scalp ere the season is over; I'll make you pack your grip and get back to Cincinnati before the leaves begin to fall." - Kid Baldwin, as quoted in the June 23, 1886 edition of Sporting Life

Clarence "Kid" Baldwin played seven seasons in the majors, mostly for the Cincinnati Red Stockings. He was primarily a catcher, although he played more than a handful of games in both the outfield and at third base. Born in Kentucky, he played in the Northwestern League at age 18 and umpired one game in the American Association in 1887.
