Biographical Information[edit]
Relief pitcher Kevin Roberts played four seasons in the minor leagues, from 2005 to 2008. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 5th round of the 2005 amateur draft from the University of Houston.
He split his first professional season in 2005 between the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League and the West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League, going a combined 3-4, 3.99 in 17 games. In 2006 he spent the entire season with West Virginia as a swingman, going 6-10, 4.51 in 39 games, including 13 starts, and pitching 103 2/3 innings while recording 8 saves. In 2007, he became a full-time reliever with the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League, going 6-3, 3.44 in 45 games, with 4 saves.
On December 7, 2007, he was traded by the Brewers to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with Marino Salas in return for Salomon Torres. Torres had settled down in Pittsburgh, PA and threatened at first not to accept the deal (he had retired for a few years earlier in his career, so it was not an empty threat) but eventually decided to accept the move. However, neither young pitcher acquired by the Bucs did much for them. Salas only pitched 13 times for the big league team, and Roberts went 1-6, 4.76 in splitting the 2008 season between the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League and the Altoona Curve of the Eastern League. His ERA in 13 games at AA was 7.56, and even though he pitched better in Class A and picked up 9 saves, he was released after the season.
