The next year, he batted .314 with 56 doubles (out of just 149 hits) with the Artesia Drillers, prompting the Burlington Bees to take him in that years Rule V Draft. In his first and only year outside of the Longhorn League and West Texas-New Mexico League, he slipped to .290 with just 88 hits in 84 games. He returned to the Longhorn League in 1954, slashing .360/.400/.560 with 14 home runs, 97 RBI, 94 runs, 31 walks and just 8 strikeouts in 110 games in what would be his final season.
