First baseman/outfielder Karl Bolt attended the United States Air Force Academy. He hit .334 during his time there and was team MVP his last two seasons. During his senior year, Bolt led the squad with a .349 average, 68 hits, 8 homers, 16 doubles, 34 runs scored, and 47 RBIs and was a first team All-Mountain West Conference selection.

After graduation, Bolt was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 15th round of the 2007 amateur draft. He became only the fourth player from the Air Force Academy to ever be drafted (the others were Brad Fulk in 1972, Jeff Brown in 1975 and 1976, and Mike Thiessen in 2001). He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Phillies, hitting .256 with 8 homers and 31 RBIs in 57 games for the club. Along with Thiessen and Matt Kaercher, he is one of just three Air Force Academy players to ever play pro ball.
