Biographical Information[edit]

Kamren James followed his older brother and father to Mississippi State University. His father, Greg, played football there, and his brother, Keegan, pitched there before being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 2019 amateur draft. He is a cousin of All-Star third baseman Austin Riley. The younger James brother, who like his cousin is mainly a third baseman, was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 16th round of the 2022 amateur draft and his professional career commenced that summer in the Florida Complex League. He hit only .221, but showed good patience and power with an on base percentage exactly 100 points higher than his batting average, and a .385 slugging percentage fueled by 11 doubles and 8 home runs. He struck out 71 times in 226 at bats, but also did not commit a single error at either third or second base.

He moved up to the low-A Carolina League to begin 2023 and spent two months with the Charleston RiverDogs. In 43 games, he slashed .207/.305/.336 with 6 doubles and 4 round-trippers. His strikeout rate went down slightly, too, but he committed 5 errors (4 at third base and 1 at first base). He was moved up to the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the advanced-A South Atlantic League a the beginning of June.
