Biographical Information[edit]

Justyn-Henry Malloy was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 6th round of the 2021 amateur draft from Georgia Tech, to which he had transferred after playing two seasons for Vanderbilt University. He was a corner infielder in college, but began playing the outfield regularly after turning pro. In his lone season with the Yellow Jackets, he hit .308 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs in 56 games. He was a bit player as a freshman for the Vanderbilt team that won the 2019 College World Series, but hit just .067 in 14 games that season.

He began his pro career in 2021 with the Augusta GreenJackets of Low-A East, hitting ,271 in 37 games. In 2022, he played for three different teams - the Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League, the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League, and the Gwinnett Stripers of the International League, reaching AAA barely a year after turning pro. He hit a combined .289/.408/.454 in 133 games, with 28 doubles and 17 homers, scoring 91 runs and driving in 81. He then played in the Arizona Fall League after the season. He was named a Braves organizational All-Star.

On December 7, 2022, he was involved in a major league trade, being sent to the Detroit Tigers along with P Jake Higginbotham in return for P Joe Jimenez. He then spent all of 2023 in AAA with the Toledo Mud Hens and had another very good season, hitting .277/.417/.474 in 135 games, with 25 doubles, 23 homers, 89 runs and 83 RBIs. More honors followed, including getting to play in the 2023 Futures Game, being named a Tigers organizational All-Star, and an All-Star in both the International League and AAA as a whole. The next step for him was to make his major league debut during the 2024 season as he had little left to prove in the minors. That day came on June 3rd, after he had started the season in AAA with Toledo, where he was hitting .253 after 45 games. In his first game, he was the starting DH against the Texas Rangers and went 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts in a 2-1 win. His first major league hit was a homer off Jose Ureña of the Rangers on June 5th; it came in the 6th inning after Ureña had retired the first 15 batters in order, but it proved to be the sole highlight for the Tigers in a 9-1 loss. On June 30th, he put his speed on display when he hit the first inside-the-park homer by a Tigers player since 2021 in a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels. While he easily outran the Angels' defenders, he almost ran out of gas in the last leg towards home plate, finally tumbling home and hugging the plate to complete the feat.
