Biographical Information[edit]

Relief pitcher Julian Vasquez played in the New York Mets system from 1987 to 1992, in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 1998 and in independent ball in 2001.

He began with three solid seasons, then had a 2.17 ERA in 25 games—24 of which he finished—for the Columbia Mets in 1990. He had an otherworldly campaign in 1991, allowing just 2 earned runs in 64 innings—that's a 0.28 ERA—over 56 appearances for the St. Lucie Mets while saving 25 games, finishing 47 and allowing just 35 hits. He was a Florida State League All-Star, alongside Rich Batchelor. Going into 1992, Baseball America ranked him the #92 prospect in the minor leagues.

After spending five years in the low minors, he ascended quickly after his '91 campaign, but 1992 proved to be his final season in affiliated ball. He had a 1.35 ERA and 17 saves in 24 games for the Double-A Binghamton Mets and, in his only trial at Triple-A, posted a 5.56 mark in 20 games for the Tidewater Tides; in total he had 23 saves and a 3.28 ERA in 44 games. On October 6, he was sent as the player to be named later to complete a deal made in April that also sent Julio Valera to the California Angels for Dick Schofield. He was then placed on the 60-day disabled list to start the 1993 season.

He did not play from 1993 to 1997, but resurfaced with the Brother Elephants of the CPBL in 1998, posting a 2.48 mark in 11 games. He again took a hiatus, but returned to go 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 30 games for the independent Somerset Patriots in 2001.

In the affiliated minor leagues, he was 10-20 with 77 saves and a 2.58 ERA in 206 games over 6 seasons. At all levels, he was 14-22 with 81 saves and a 2.67 ERA in 247 games.
