Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Juan Then was involved in two major league trades before turning 20. He was originally signed by the Seattle Mariners out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2016 and began his pro career the next year at age 17 with the DSL Mariners. He went 2-2, 2.64 in 13 games as a starter, but had evidently caught the eyes of the New York Yankees, as they acquired him, along with fellow minor league P J.P. Sears, in return for major leaguer Nick Rumbelow on November 18th.

In what turned out to be his only season in the Yankees' system, Juan moved to the U.S. with the GCL Yankees East in 2018. While he was 0-3 in 11 starts, he had a solid 2.70 ERA and 42 Ks and 11 walks in 50 innings. On June 15, 2019, before the start of short-season ball, he was traded back to the Mariners, being the sole return for slugger Edwin Encarnación, who was leading the American League with 21 homers at the time.

He made his major league debut with Seattle on May 6, 2023, four years after the second trade, pitching one scoreless inning in relief against the Houston Astros.
