Biographical Information

Catcher Juan Alcala played in the Seattle Mariners organization from 1995 to 2002.

He spent his first professional season with the DSL Mariners, hitting only .164. He improved to .261 in a return engagement with the club in 1996. Coming stateside in 1997, he split time between the AZL Mariners and the Everett AquaSox, hitting a combined .208 in 38 games; in 1998, he played for the AquaSox again and batted only .163/.202/.231 in 109 at-bats. He did not play defense well either - despite being a backup (to Carlos Maldonado, he led the Northwest League with 19 passed balls.

The following year, he played for Everett, the Lancaster JetHawks and the Tacoma Rainiers (only one game) and put together a .178 average while striking out 24 times and walking only once in 73 at-bats. His average jumped to .273 in 2000 as he played in 28 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, New Haven Ravens and Tacoma Rainiers, and in 2001, he drove in a career-high 24 RBI as he hit .254/.296/.302 in 72 games with the San Bernardino Stampede (backing up Ryan Christianson). Following the 2001 season, he was granted free-agency by the Mariners, but he was re-signed before 2002. He played for San Bernardino and the San Antonio Missions that year, hitting .200/.227/.238 in 31 games, with 14 passed balls in 28 games at catcher. On February 12, 2003, he voluntarily retired from baseball.

In total, Juan Alcala hit .220 with five home runs and 71 RBI in 224 US minor league games. In 727 at-bats, he walked only 29 times while whiffing 189 times - he never walked more than nine times in a season.
