Biographical Information

Jovanny Cedeno spent five seasons in the Texas Rangers system.

He began his professional career at 17 years old, going 10-2 with a 2.56 ERA for the DSL Rangers in his first campaign, in 1997. He led the Dominican Summer League in wins, one ahead of Jesús Colome and Isabel Giron. He saw limited time the next year with the same team, presumably due to injuries (1-0, 1.42). He played for the GCL Rangers and Port Charlotte Rangers in 1999. Between the two clubs, he went 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA in 7 games, striking out 37 batters in 32 1/3 innings. He had a 0.33 ERA in 6 Gulf Coast League starts, tops in the loop (beating Dennis Tankersley by 0.43). With the Savannah Sand Gnats in 2000, he went 11-4 with a 2.42 ERA in 24 games (22 starts), allowing just 95 hits, while striking out 153 batters, in 130 1/3 innings. Prior to that season, he was ranked the #9 prospect in the Rangers system by Baseball America; prior to 2001, he was ranked #2 in the Rangers system and #65 overall. With Port Charlotte that year, he had no decisions and a 1.86 ERA in 3 games. Ranked Texas' #8 prospect going into 2002, he had another truncated season, posting a 0.00 mark in 3 games (1 start) for the GCL Rangers. He played his final campaign in 2003, posting a 1.93 mark and 9.4 K/9 IP ratio in 16 relief appearances between the AZL Rangers and Clinton LumberKings. His promising career had been derailed by numerous injuries.

Overall, Cedeno went 19-4 with a 2.06 ERA in 53 games (33 starts) not counting his DSL stats - he was 30-6 adding those in. In 210 stateside innings, he allowed 137 hits and 74 walks (1.005 WHIP), while striking out 240 batters (10.3 per 9 IP).
