Biographical Information[edit]
Josh Sale was the 17th pick of the 2010 amateur draft, going to the Tampa Bay Rays. The high school outfielder drew notice for his power but there was concern about his contact hitting. Surprisingly, he was not the first player named Sale taken in the draft as college hurler Chris Sale went at #13. He made his pro debut in 2011 with the Princeton Rays on June 21, going 1 for 3 with a homer and a walk against the Burlington Royals. He then went hitless in 14 at-bats in his next four games.
After a decent start to his 2012 season, Sale was suspended 50 games for methamphetamine and amphetamine use on August 28. On May 28, 2013, while serving this suspension, Sale was suspended again, this time indefinitely, for conduct detrimental to the organization. This stemmed from an incident in which he bragged about throwing 50¢ at a stripper. Quoth Sale from his now deleted Facebook page:
Threw 50 cents at a stripper tonight. First time. Got kicked out and she got so pissed thought she was gonna cry. Your a stripper. Be thankful. Hoe. (sic)
Sale did not play play in 2013. He began 2014 in the Florida State League with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. He got off to a dismal start, hitting only .192 and striking out 14 times in his first 52 at bats. He finished the year hitting .238/.332/.313. He was released by the Rays organization on March 2, 2015, seemingly bringing his professional career to an end.
