Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Puentes was born in Brownsville, TX, but his family moved to Mexico when he was still young. It was in Mexico that he developed his love for baseball. His family returned to the Brownsville area when he was 15. After high school he played at the University of the Incarnate Word where he earned a degree in Spanish Language Education Teaching.

After graduating, Puentes remained in the San Antonio, TX area teaching Spanish in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City school district and coaching baseball for several years at local high schools. He changed careers in 2013 and worked selling cars for the next 4-5 years. Puentes returned to teaching and coaching in fall 2017 and stayed in these roles through 2019, first in the Judson school district and then at Douglas MacArthur High School

The Houston Astros hired Puentes in 2020 as a hitting coach for the DSL Astros before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. He continued his hitting coach duties with the FCL Astros in 2021 and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers in 2022.
