Biographical Information[edit]
José Mosquera caught in the minors then managed the Colombian national team. He also managed the first Colombian team to win the Caribbean Series. He is the nephew of Luis Sierra Sr. [1]
Playing Career[edit]
He was the first Colombian signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 2004. [2] He did not last long with them then was signed by Pittsburgh Pirates scout Orlando Covo. [3] He hit .246/.505/.262 with 16 walks and 18 hit-by-pitch in 39 games for the 2005 VSL Pirates, fielding .975 at C and throwing out 35% of those who tried to steal. Despite only playing about half the time, he led the Venezuelan Summer League in times plunked.
In 2006, he batted .235/.432/.294 with 17 HBP in 50 games for the VSL Pirates and again threw out 35% of would-be base-thieves. He was third in the VSL in hit-by-pitch. Let go, he caught on briefly with the 2009 Yuma Scorpions, a Colombian-loaded team. He batted .224/.303/.269 for them and threw out 16% of base-stealers, backing up Carlos Balcazar at catcher.
Post-Playing Career[edit]
In 2016, he became a Pirates scout. [4] He signed Santiago Florez and Francisco Acuña. [5] He managed Colombia in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, guiding them to a Bronze, 72 years after their most recent medal in baseball at the Central American and Caribbean Games. [6] He coached for Panama in the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier [7] then managed them in the 2019 Pan American Games. [8] He coached them in the 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier. [9] In addition, Mosquera served as the Colombian bench coach during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
In the Colombian League, he managed Caimanes de Barranquilla to back to back titles in 2020-21 and 2021-22, and in 2022 led them to the first ever Caribbean Series title by a team from Colombia.
Mosquera was a coach for the DSL Pirates 2 in 2019. In addition, Mosquera managed the Toros de Sincelejo during the 2019/2020 Liga Colombiana de Béisbol Profesional winter season. Mosquera was scheduled to manage the 2020 DSL Pirates 2 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He then managed the DSL Pirates Gold in 2021, the FCL Pirates in 2022, and DSL Pirates Gold again in 2024.
