Biographical Information[edit]
Jose Gonzales played in the Boston Red Sox minor league system for a number of years beginning in 1997 in the Dominican Summer League. He played in the U.S. from 2000-2002 reaching low-A ball in his final season.
Following his playing career, Gonzalez began a lengthy run as a pitching coach in the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays organizations.

His 2014 Princeton Rays pitching staff was first in the Appalachian League in lowest earned run average at 2.92 while also walking the fewest hitters in the league for the season. Gonzalez was scheduled to be the GCL Rays pitching coach in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. In 2021, "Gonzo" flip-flopped roles with Alberto Bastardo in a move planned before the season began.
Gonzalez also worked as a pitching coach for the Perth Heat of the Australian Baseball League in the winter of 2019/2020.
