Biographical Information[edit]
Jose Alvarez, also known as Ricky Alvarez, began his professional career in 2007 after being taken by the New York Mets in the 37th round of the 2007 amateur draft (he was signed by scout Fred Mazuca). After a year in their system, he moved to the Los Angeles Angels chain, where he played from 2008 to 2011, peaking at Single-A. In the Triple-A round of the 2011 Rule V Draft, he was selected by the Chicago Cubs, though he never played in their system. In 2012, he joined the Mexican League, where he remained for the rest of his career. He had multiple seasons of note. In 2013, he hit .285/.320/.485 with 21 home runs, 81 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 110 games for the Sultanes de Monterrey and in 2016, he batted .329/.365/.570 with 24 home runs and 91 RBI in 111 games for the Vaqueros Laguna. With the Toros de Tijuana in 2019, he hit .351/.391/.597 with 29 home runs and 95 RBI in 113 games. He was a Mid-Season All-Star in 2013 and 2017.
He's also spent many seasons in the Mexican Pacific Winter League.
Through the end of the 2023-24 winter league season, he has over 200 home runs and over 1,000 RBI at all levels.
