Biographical Information

Pitcher José Ferrer was signed by the Washington Nationals as an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2017. He began his professional career a year later with the DSL Nationals, going 1-1, 3.60 in 14 games as a reliver. He moved to the U.S. in 2019 when he played for the GCL Nationals, going 2-3, 2.91 in 9 games. He then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic.

When minor league baseball resumed in 2021, he was back where he had been in 2019 - or at least its equivalent as there had been a Minor League Reorganization in the interim. With the FCL Nationals, he was 0-4, 2.78 in 17 games. So far, he had not really done anything to emerge from the mass of low-level pitching prospects, but in 2022 he managed to catch scouts' eyes and was named as a result to play on the National League team at the 2022 Futures Game. He appeared with three different teams that season, starting off with the Fredericksburg Nationals of the Carolina League, and successively moving up to the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the South Atlantic League and the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League. His record overall was 3-2, 2.48 in 48 games, all in relief. with 11 saves and 78 strikeouts against just 11 walks in 65 1/3 innings. He was added to the Nationals' 40-man roster after the season.

He made his major league debut with the Nationals on July 1, 2023 after starting the season with the AAA Rochester Red Wings, he was 4-3, 3.83 in 34 games in relief when he got the call to D.C. In his debut, he pitched one scoreless inning, striking out 2, in a 19-4 beatdown at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies. His good performance was in marked contrast to the three pitchers who had preceded him on the mound that day and who had combined to give up all 19 runs in just five innings.
