Biographical Information[edit]

Jorge Pérez has pitched in the minors and for the Mexican national team.

He had a 2.94 career ERA in high school. [1] He was 4-3 with a 2.69 ERA as a college freshman then 8-4 with a save and a 2.86 ERA as a sophomore, walking only 23 in 107 innings. He fell to 1-6, 3.43 with 3 saves as a junior. The New York Yankees took him in the 30th round of the 2014 amateur draft but he did not sign.

Redshirting in 2015 (presumably due to injury), he was 0-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 2016. He apparently did not make his pro debut until the 2018-2019 Australian Baseball League, when he was 1-1 with a save and a 3.91 ERA in 18 games for the Adelaide Bite. He tied Todd Van Steensel for 6th in the ABL in appearances. He was 1-0 with a 5.96 ERA in 33 games for the 2019 Toros de Tijuana then was 1-0 with two saves and a 5.74 ERA for the Perth Heat in the 2019-2020 ABL.

After the 2020 Mexican League season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to action for the 2021 Toros, going 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA. He split 2022 between Tijuana (11 R in 5 IP) and the Guerreros de Oaxaca (3-3, 6.11 in 10 G). Back with Tijuana for 2023, he was 1-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 8 games (6 starts), issuing just two walks in 35 2/3 IP. In the 2023-2024 Mexican Pacific League, he was 3-3 with a 1.87 ERA for the Algodoneros de Guasave.

Jorge posted a 8-1, 3.13 record for the '24 Toros. He tied for 8th in the LMB in victories. Pitching for the Mexican squad in the 2024 Premier 12 (far from the only Mexican-American to represent the country in the decade), he made one appearance, starting against the Netherlands. Staked to a 4-0 lead in the first, he began his day by retiring major league veterans Didi Gregorius and Jonathan Schoop before Hendrik Clementina singled. His first strikeout was Dwayne Kemp. He cruised through four shutout innings but tired in the 5th. Ray-Patrick Didder singled, Kemp homered, Delano Selassa grounded out, Gregorius doubled and Schoop tripled to cut the score to 4-3. Gerardo Reyes came in and got out of the jam; Mexico wound up with a 8-6 victory, the decision going to a reliever as his team fell behind and had to rally to win. [2]
