Biographical Information[edit]

The Houston Astros signed Jorge Moncada as a free agent in 2001 and he played in their minor league system through 2004, spending his entire career in the Venezuelan Summer League.

After his playing career ended, Moncada immediately embarked on a coaching career. He started as a pitching coach in the Venezuelan Parallel League in 2005-2006 with the Navegantes del Magallanes and Leones del Caracas teams respectively. The Parallel League is for newly signed players not yet ready for play in the regular Venezuelan League. One source reported that Moncada spent the 2005 summer season as a bullpen coach for the VSL Astros.

In 2006 Moncado joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization where he has continued to coach through 2023. He started as a pitching instructor in 2006. The next year he was the pitching coach for a co-op team, the VSL Devil Rays/Reds, as the Devil Rays were just starting to establish a presence in Venezuela. The Rays had their own team in 2008 and Moncada worked as the pitching coach for the VSL Rays through 2012. It appears he started 2013 in the VSL also, but then received a promotion to pitching coach of the Hudson Valley Renegades at some point in the season. He returned to the Renegades in 2014.

Moncada took on a larger role with the Rays in 2015 as a minor league assistant pitching coordinator. The following year "assistant" was removed from his title and he remained a hitting coordinator through the 2022 season. In 2023, he was named the Rays' major league bullpen coach, replacing Stan Boroski who retired after 11 seasons in the job.
