Jorge Avellán played for the Nicaraguan national team for over a decade. In the 1994 Baseball World Cup, he had 3 at-bats, but made them count with a double and a home run. He was also a defensive substitute to Jenrry Roa at third base. He did not play in the Bronze Medal game, which Nicaragua lost.
In the 1995 Intercontinental Cup, Avellán hit .241/.281/.379 as the starting shortstop for Nicaragua. Nicaragua and Jorge won the Silver at the 1995 Pan American Games. He was with Nicaragua for the 1996 Olympics, batting .269/.321/.346 with 6 runs in 7 games while playing all infield positions except first base. In the Bronze Medal game, he hit second and went 1 for 4 against Seth Greisinger and Braden Looper in a loss to Team USA. He made one error in nine chances at shortstop.
Avellán only batted .179/.258/.287 in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, but played error-free defense at third base. He helped Nicaragua to a Silver in the 1997 Central American Games. Jorge was 1 for 12 with two walks in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, splitting third base with Roa and Norman Cardoze. He played for Nicaragua as they won Silver in the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games.
He hit .250 in the 1999 Pan American Games. During the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the 29-year-old veteran hit .360/.429/.400 but fielded only .880 at the hot corner. Only Roa had a better average among Nicaragua's regulars. He helped Nicaragua win Gold at the 2001 Central American Games and remained with them for the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Avellán did not appear in either the 2003 Baseball World Cup or 2005 Baseball World Cup. He helped Nicaragua take Gold in the 2006 Central American Games and was picked as the All-Star third baseman. He was 34 by the time the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games rolled around; he was just 3 for 18 with a walk in that event. In the 2006 COPABE Olympic qualifiers, Jorge hit .278/.333/.333 while alternating between shortstop and third base.
The Rivas native was 3 for 15 with a walk, double and run in the 2007 Pan American Games, but the run was the game-winner against the favored Dominican national team. Nicaragua went on to win a Bronze Medal in the Games.
In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, the old-timer batted .238/.407/.286 to help Nicaragua win a spot at the 2009 Baseball World Cup. His six walks were one behind tourney leader and teammate Justo Rivas.
Through 2008, Avellán had 1,154 hits in the Nicaraguan league, 23rd all-time in that circuit.
He coached for Nicaragua in the 2015 Pan American Games and 2017 Central American Games (Gold Medal) and managed them in the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup.
