Biographical Information[edit]

Jordan Weems was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2011 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox, out of a high school in his hometown of Columbus, GA. He was a catcher at the time, and that was his position for his first five minor league seasons, from 2011 to 2015. During that span, he reached AA for a brief spell, playing 17 games for the Portland Sea Dogs in 2015. However, most of the stretch was in Class A, where he was a defense-first backstop with a great arm. Most of his games were with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, where his batting averages were .201, .204 and .166 as the team's primary catcher from 2012 to 2014.

In 2016, the Red Sox decided to convert him to pitching, and he began appearing on the mound that year, going 3-0, 3.58 in 19 games in relief between two teams, logging 32 2/3 innings, while also playing first base occasionally, although he hit just .119 in what were his final at-bats in organized baseball. He was a full-time pitcher starting in 2017 and by 2018, he made his first two appearances in AAA. He pitched for three teams that year, going 4-3, 3.36 in 43 games in Class A, AA and AAA. He struck out 63 batters in 59 innings. In 2019, he pitched 33 games for AA Portland and 8 with the Pawtucket Red Sox of the International League, going 0-3, 4.37 with saves.

He left the Red Sox organization after the 2019 season, signing as a minor league free agent with the Oakland Athletics and receiving an invitation to spring training as a non-roster invitee in 2020. Not only did he do well enough in the first few weeks of spring for the A's to add him to their 60-player pool when "summer camp" resumed in July after the forced break due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he managed to make the team's opening day roster. That made him one of a few long shots around the major leagues taking advantage of the increased opportunities caused by the health crisis. He appeared in his first game on July 28th.
