Biographical Information[edit]

Relief pitcher Jonathan Hovis played in the New York Yankees system from 2006 to 2009. He was an undrafted free agent.

With the Staten Island Yankees in 2006, Hovis went 5-1 with a 1.73 ERA in 25 appearances. The next year, with the Charleston RiverDogs, he was 4-5 with a 1.69 ERA and 30 saves in 55 games. He led the South Atlantic League in saves, with the runner-up, Blake Jones, trailing by 11 with 19. He was a Mid-Season All-Star and a Baseball America Low Class-A All-Star. With the Tampa Yankees in 2008, Hovis went 2-0 with a 1.14 ERA in 21 appearances, saving 10 games and posting a 0.676 WHIP. A 25-year-old pitcher at High-A in 2009, Hovis went 2-2, 3.38 with a league-leading 22 saves for Tampa in 2009 to earn Florida State League Post-Season All-Star honors. He also spent a couple games with the Trenton Thunder, posting a 4.91 ERA in 3 2/3 frames.

Overall, Hovis went 13-9 with 62 saves a 2.15 ERA in 147 games. In 175 2/3 innings, he allowed 135 hits and 41 walks (1.002 WHIP) and had 155 strikeouts.

His cousin, Reilly Hovis, began his professional career in 2016.
