Biographical Information[edit]

Jon Coutlangus appeared in 64 games during his one year in the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds in 2007. He was third on the pitching squad behind 37-year-old David Weathers who was in 70 games and 40-year-old Mike Stanton who appeared in 69 games.

Jon was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 19th round of the 2003 amateur draft and signed by scout Dick Tidrow. In college, he hit .316 in his last year with the South Carolina Gamecocks, stealing 13 bases. Debuting in the minors with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes as an outfielder, he hit .301/.394/.392 and was 8th in the Northwest League in average. Jon slipped to a .194/.242/.293 line for the 2004 Hagerstown Suns with 12 steals in 16 attempts. A year later, he was a relief pitcher for the San Jose Giants. He went 4-0 with three saves and a 3.04 ERA in 50 outings, striking out 79 in 77 innings. Before the 2006 season, the Cincinnati Reds claimed him off waivers. He was 1-3 with 9 saves and a 2.86 ERA in 49 outings for the Chattanooga Lookouts, allowing a .185 average. In two games for the Louisville Bats, he did not give up a run.

Jon made the Reds' staff out of spring training 2007 and made his debut on April 7th, pitching 2/3 of an inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a LOOGY, appearing 64 times for a total of 41 innings with a 4-2, 4.39 record. This would prove to be his only big league action. In April 2008, he was dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Daniel Perales, pitching for the D-Backs AAA affiliates, the Tucson Sidewinders in 2008 and the Reno Aces in 2009. He was 0-2, 12.71 in only 5 games due to injury the first year, then 1-0, 6.52 in 21 games the second, after which he retired.
