Biographical Information[edit]

Jon Aceves has played over 1,000 games in the minors; his brother Alfredo Aceves made the majors.

Jon was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1997. He made his debut as a pro with the 1997 GCL White Sox, hitting .184/.287/.237. He had 13 passed balls in 43 games for the '98 Bristol White Sox but batted .296/.425/.519 with 30 RBI and 29 walks. He slumped to .188/.329/.312 for the 1999 Burlington Bees. In 2000, he had 18 passed balls to lead the Carolina League despite a part-time role for the Winston-Salem Warthogs and his offense remained poor (.212/.280/.328). The next year, he appeared for the Warthogs (.214/.302/.350 in 70 G) and the Birmingham Barons (8 for 36, 2B, 2 HR, 2 BB). During 2002, he backed up Miguel Olivo with Birmingham (.232/.321/.348 in 60 G) and made it to AAA briefly with the Charlotte Knights (0 for 1). In '03, he had his best offensive campaign in five years, making stops with the Kannapolis Intimidators (.284/.359/.580 in 24 G), Birmingham (.230/.331/.357 in 51 G) and Charlotte (9 for 25, 2 2B, 2 BB). He played for the Mexican national team in the 2003 Baseball World Cup, serving as their only catcher; he hit .267/.290/.300 with four runs and no RBI in seven games and excelled on defense (no errors, throwing out 10 of 14 who tried to steal).

He kept on hitting in 2004, batting .225/.404/.450 in 13 games for Birmingham and .285/.363/.490 in 49 games for Charlotte, with 10 home runs and 27 walks in 62 games. In 2005, the organizational backup hit .267/.363/.438 in 70 games (backing up Chris Stewart) and .204/.271/.370 in 16 contests with Charlotte. Moving to the Florida Marlins in 2006, he hit .238/.307/.397 in 81 games for the Carolina Mudcats and was 1 for 3 for the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Aceves then returned to his native Mexico. He had a big summer in 2007 with the Saraperos de Saltillo, producing at a .301/.390/.558 clip with 19 home runs and 60 runs in 90 games. He was third on the club in homers behind Kit Pellow and Mario Valenzuela, playing DH when Noe Muñoz was catching. In '08, Jon hit .274/.328/.453, followed by .251/.302/.413 in 2009 and .244/.308/.374 in 2010, when he began taking over for catcher for Muñoz (then 42) at catcher. In 2011, he played error-free defense at catcher (he had two errors in limited time in RF) and hit .290/.362/.503 with 12 home runs. During 2012, the veteran was 3 for 10 with a walk, presumably limited by injury. He was back into regular action in 2013, hitting .246/.312/.432 and going deep 11 times.

In Game 1 of the 2014 Caribbean Series, he formed a brother battery with Alfredo for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. He went 1 for 6 with a sacrifice fly (scoring Luis Fonseca) as the backup to Sebastián Valle as Hermosillo won the title.
