Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Luis Fonseca played five seasons for Isla de la Juventud in the Cuban National League before defecting and continuing his career in Mexico.

His stint in the Cuban League was from 2004-2005 to 2008-2009, starting at age 19. He became a regular in his sophomore season, hitting .309 in 84 games in 2005-2006 and following that up by hitting.311 in 89 games in 2006-2007. However, he then slumped the next year, to .235, before bouncing back to hit .287 in 67 games in his fifth and final year on the island.

After his defection, he only returned to action in 2011 with the Petroleros de Minatitlan in the Mexican League where he hit .286 in 37 games. In 2012, he hit a brilliant .407 for the Oilers, but only in 25 games, then followed that up by batting .337 in 24 games for the Mayos de Navojoa in the Mexican Pacific League. As a result, he was once again a regular in 2013, after a long interruption, playing 103 games and batting a scorching .396 for Minatitlan, with 21 doubles, 9 triples and 20 homers. However, la Liga was a hitters' paradise that season, so he was only 5th overall in batting average among qualifiers, in spite of his lofty numbers. He then hit .335 for Navojoa in the winter season and took part in the 2014 Caribbean Series on loan to the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, who ended up winning the tournament. In the penultimate game against the Tigres de Aragua on February 6th, he hit a key single in the 9th inning against Guillermo Mota, setting up Sebastian Valle to hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in a 3-2 win.

He played relatively little in the next two seasons - 37 games between two teams in the Mexican League in 2014 and 21, again between two teams, in 2015. In 2016, he was once again a regular, this time with the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz, batting .287 in 96 games, but he fell to .225 in 61 games in 2017. He then played relatively little in his final two seasons in 2018 and 2019, while moving around a number of times.
