Biographical Information

Johnny Butler reached the majors at age 33 and was a regular for two years with the Brooklyn Robins before becoming a backup with the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. A weak hitter (.252/.320/.317 slash line in 375 games during an explosive offense era), he played a roughly equal number of games at shortstop (203) and third base (168). He was a Chicago White Sox coach in 1932. In the minors, he managed the 1931 Denver Bears, 1933 Des Moines Demons and split 1935 at the reins between the Nashville Volunteers and Decatur Commodores. He is not to be confused with John Butler.
