Biographical Information[edit]

John Sullivan is a common name, but this John Sullivan distinguished himself by playing 81 games in the majors in each of 1920 and 1921, hitting well each time. He was 30 years old by the time he came to the bigs. He played at least nine years in the minors, including a good year with the 1919 New Orleans Pelicans which may have made him desirable to big league teams.

He and Eddie Eayrs were the best hitters on the Boston Braves in 1920. The Chicago Cubs purchased him in May of 1921, and he spent most of the season with them, as one of the better hitters on the team. He was, however, one of the oldest players on the team, and the Cubs traded him to the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels in early 1922.

There have been (through 2019) four other major leaguers named John Sullivan, including one who played for a Chicago-based team around the same time, John Sullivan who was with the Chicago White Sox in 1919.
