Biographical Information[edit]
John "Brode" Shovlin played three seasons in the majors and at least 14 in the minors. He was one of the youngest players in the 1911 National League when he made his major league debut that year.
Shovlin was born in Drifton, PA, south of Scranton, PA. He played for Erie in 1910, and split 1911 between Erie and Waterbury. He also came up to the majors for two games in 1911, on a team which featured the 38-year-old player-manager Fred Clarke as well as the 37-year-old Honus Wagner.
Shovlin was back in the minors from 1912-19, spending much of that time with Columbus as well as teams in the Ohio State League. He came back to the majors in 1919-20, appearing in 16 more games, this time with the St. Louis Browns during the time of George Sisler.
