Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher John Richy was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 2014 amateur draft out of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The scout was Bobby Darwin. He made his professional debut that year with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League and also pitched for the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League before the year was out. Between the two stops, he had no record and a 3.74 ERA in 12 games, including 9 starts. He only pitched 33 2/3 innings as the Dodgers were careful to control his workload as he was coming out of a long college season.

Richy was assigned to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League to begin the 2015 season. There, he pitched like a top prospect should, going 10-5, 4.20 in 22 games. The seemingly high ERA was misleading, given the fact he was pitching in a park very favorable to hitters. In 124 1/3 innings, he struck out 105 batters and walked only 34. On August 19th, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with IF/OF Darnell Sweeney in return for veteran major league 2B Chase Utley.
