Biographical Information[edit]

John Radcliff played five seasons in the National Association for the Philadelphia Athletics, the Baltimore Canaries, the Philadelphia Whites, and the Philadelphia Centennials. He played most of his games in the infield. In 157 career games, he had a lifetime batting average of .282 with 113 runs batted in.

Radcliff was expelled from the National Association after he attempted to bribe umpire William McLean with $175 to help the Chicago White Stockings win in 1874. Candy Cummings, Denny Mack, Nat Hicks were also implicated but never blacklisted. He was reinstated one year later.

In addition to his playinmg career, he umpired one game in 1873.
