Biographical Information[edit]
Nat Hicks was a Civil War veteran and played for teams such as the Stars and the Nationals prior to the time the National Association got started in 1871. He did not appear in 1871, but played in from 1872 to 1877 and was one of the older players on the 1872 New York Mutuals team.
Long after his retirement as a player, he umpired four games in the American Association in 1885.
At the time of his death, he was managing a billiard room. Source: Nat Hicks obituary, Sporting Life, April 27, 1907. The obituary called him one of the best-known catchers in the country in the 1870's.
