Biographical Information[edit]
Spartanburg John McMakin was born in Spartanburg, SC and attended Clemson University, also in South Carolina. He was the first major leaguer out of Clemson.
After being at Clemson in 1900-1901, he came to the majors in 1902 for four games with the Brooklyn Superbas, posting a record of 2-2. The Superbas had a strong pitching staff and McMakin spent most of the season at Columbus, where he also spent 1903. In 1904 and 1905 he played for Atlanta and Montgomery, and in 1907 he played for his hometown Spartanburg.
McMakin was head coach of the Clemson baseball team in 1904-1906.
Another athlete of the same name, John Garvin McMakin, was born in Spartanburg and played several seasons in the NFL.
