Biographical Information[edit]

John Lujan pitched as high as AAA.

Lujan was taken by the Texas Rangers in the 15th round of the 2004 amateur draft, one round after they chose Tug Hulett. The scout was Rick Schroeder. He split 2004 between the AZL Rangers (1-1, 1.71 in 10 G) and Spokane Indians (1-0, 2.20 in 4 G). With the 2005 Clinton Lumber Kings, he was 4-4 with five saves and a 2.80 ERA in 31 games. In '06, he fell to 1-4 with 4 saves and a 5.74 ERA for the Bakersfield Blaze, his walk rate increasing (43 in 69 IP after 27 in 64 1/3 IP the prior year).

Texas traded him to the Chicago White Sox for Chris Stewart. During 2007, John rebounded to go 2-5 with 11 saves and a 3.73 ERA for the Winston-Salem Warthogs, making a team-high 49 appearances. The Waco native went 3-2 with four saves and a 3.43 ERA in 50 games for the 2008 Birmingham Barons. In 2009, he was less successful with Birmingham (3-5, Sv, 4.45). That off-season, the New York Mets claimed him in the minor AAA phase of the 2009 Rule V draft.

Lujan split 2010 between the Binghamton Mets (0-1, 3 Sv, 2.55 in 20 G) and Buffalo Bisons (2-3, 4 Sv, 5.79), striking out 71 in 62 innings between the two stops. In '11, he was with Binghamton (0-3, 7 Sv, 3.48 in 15 G) and Buffalo (3-4, 2 Sv, 2.40 in 36 G) once more. That brought his career record to 20-32, 41 Sv, 3.71 in 321 games. In winter ball, he was 1-0 with a save and a 3.21 ERA for the Indios de Mayagüez. He had two excellent outings for the Indios in the 2012 Caribbean Series, allowing one hit, two walks and no runs in 5 2/3 IP while fanning four. He did not make the All-Tournament Team as Jairo Asencio was picked as the top reliever.
