John Lowe
John Lowe was a longtime sportswriter best known as the beat writer covering the Detroit Tigers for the Detroit Free Press from 1986 to 2014. Before that, he covered the California Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers for the Los Angeles Daily News from 1981 to 1984, and worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer for two years.
He is credited with creating the statistic "quality start", which is still used by writers and analysts. He served as President of the Baseball Writers Association of America in 2010. In 2022, he was honored with the BBWAA Career Excellence Award, with the award to be formally bestowed at the induction ceremonies for the Hall of Fame's Class of 2023.
