Biographical Information

"We propose to lay a strong hand on Henry and others like him." - American League president Ban Johnson, saying that John Henry and others of the Baseball Players Fraternity had better leave the Fraternity or leave the American League

John Henry, born in Amherst, MA, went to Amherst College and (through 2008) holds the record for the most at-bats by a major leaguer out of the school. After his major league days he continued to play in the minors through 1923. He coached Cornell University in 1920.

In the majors he was a defensive expert without much of a batting average or much power, but he did draw walks and could steal a base.

He is not to be confused with John Henry and several minor league players by the same name.

Henry was active in an early baseball players union, the Baseball Players Fraternity, and engaged in a war of words with Ban Johnson, head of the American League. According to Sporting Life of January 27, 1917, Johnson criticized Henry and Henry responded by saying "Johnson has no power to ride me out of the American League." Another issue, May 22, 1915, mentioned that Henry was an officer of the Fraternity.
