Biographical Information[edit]

John Hellweg was signed by the Los Angeles Angels and scout Tom Kotchman for a reported $150,000 as the 16th round pick of the 2008 amateur draft.

On July 27, 2012, Hellweg was traded by the Los Angeles Angels with AA teammates Jean Segura and Ariel Pena to the Milwaukee Brewers for P Zack Greinke.

After losing his first three career decisions with the Brewers after first being called up to the major leagues during the 2013 season, he notched his first career win on September 7th, when he defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-3. He gave up 3 runs in 6 innings in that game, which was his first start since being recalled to Milwaukee after the end of the minor league season. He had lost his first three starts back in late June and early July, but in between had pitched brilliantly in the minors, going 12-5, 3.15 in 23 starts with the AAA Nashville Sounds, and earning another win in a one-off start with the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers; that combined performance got him named the Brewers' Minor League Pitcher of the Year as well as the Pitcher of the Year in the Pacific Coast League.
