Biographical Information[edit]
John Grady was one of the best hitters for the Altoona Mountain City team of the Union Association in 1884. His .342 OBP was the highest on the team for any player who had at least 10 at-bats. Although John only appeared in 9 games for Altoona, his 3 doubles placed him third on the team in that category.
He was previously an amateur player in his native Philadelphia, PA. He is listed as a ballplayer in the 1885 edition of the city directory, but had several other jobs over the years. He died in Philadelphia in 1924 and is buried there.
For over a century, he was confused with another John Grady, who was born and died in Lowell, MA. That John Grady was a catcher who was playing for the Reading Actives in the Eastern League when the major leaguer was in Altoona.
