Biographical Information

John Flannery played in 7 games with the Chicago White Sox in 1977. He started one game on September 18th against the California Angels. He played shortstop and hit ninth in the batting order. In his first at bat against Balor Moore (who was also born on January 25), he struck out looking. In his second at bat, he grounded out to third base. He was pinch hit for by Oscar Gamble and replaced in the field by Don Kessinger. Previously on September 4th against the Baltimore Orioles, he had appeared as a pinch hitter and walked and scored a run against Tippy Martinez.

John made it to the big leagues at age 20. Born in Long Beach, CA, he went to Lakewood High School and was drafted in the 9th round of the 1975 Amateur Draft. He played seven seasons in the minors, usually hitting for a low average without much power, but stealing bases well and playing the middle infield. He was on minor league teams in four different major league organizations.

He does not seem to be related to Tim Flannery, a contemporary who also played in the San Diego Padres organization. Tim was with the Amarillo Gold Sox in 1979 while John was with them in 1980.
