Biographical Information[edit]

John Ellis, the son of major leaguer John Ellis, was picked in the 20th round of the 1996 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers. He began his career with the Hudson Valley Renegades, a co-op club, and hit .244/~.261/.335 as their regular catcher. His 46 K:5 BB ratio showed poor plate discipline. He spent most of 1997 with the Pulaski Rangers, batting .289/~.331/.391; he also was 0 for 2 in his debut with the Charlotte Rangers. He led Appalachian League catchers with five double plays that year.

Staying with Charlotte full-time in 1998, Ellis had a .231/~. 263/.317 batting line. In his last year, also with Charlotte, he batted .270/~.319/.329.
