Biographical Information

John Ducey was a long-time presence in baseball in Alberta.

Ducey was batboy for the Edmonton Eskimos when they included Babe Herman and Heinie Manush. He was an amateur first baseman in Edmonton from 1925-1930 then became an umpire in the Northern League and elsewhere, a role he held from 1931-1945. He later was executive, scout, coach and general manager for the Eskimos. Edmonton twice named him Sportsman of the Year (1954, 1957). The Edmonton Trappers renamed their park in his honor. Ducey was an inaugural member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, alongside Lester B. Pearson, George Selkirk, Frank Shaughnessy, Tip O'Neill and Phil Marchildon.
