Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder John Byington played in the minor leagues from 1989 to 1995. Though he spent three full years at Triple A, he never made the major leagues. On April 16, 1989, in his last year of college, he hit two game-winning home runs in the same day.

He was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 3rd round of the 1989 amateur draft, two picks ahead of first baseman John Olerud.

In his second campaign, he hit 17 home runs with 89 RBI for the Beloit Brewers; in 1992, he posted a .306 batting average for the El Paso Diablos. Though he hit 11 home runs his first year at Triple A, 1993, and slashed .310/.362/.443 with 86 RBI his second, he was passed over for a big league promotion.

Overall, he hit .279/.331/.405 with 54 home runs and 437 RBI in 809 games.

He had been named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America in 1989. He became the head baseball coach at McMurry University in 2009. He won 260 games before resigning following the 2022 season, replaced by Josh Lee.
